About Expo 2012

For more than 20 years, the East Valley Institute of Technology has been making dreams come true. Whether you have a passion for soaring through the skies, rescuing victims from a burning building, designing your own fashion line, creating the next hit video game or teaching tomorrow’s youth, EVIT can help make your dreams a reality.

Each year, EVIT holds an annual open house called EVIT Expo where prospective students, parents and family members have the opportunity to tour the campus, participate in a variety of interactive activities and learn more about career and technical education.

EVIT Expo 2012 will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Dr. A. Keith Crandell (Main) campus located at 1601 W. Main Street in Mesa. Scheduled activities include a parade of programs, car show and motorcycle exhibit, tethered hot air balloon rides, electronics recycling, live music, giveaways and more.

Several new features have been added for this year’s event. A "cake walk" will be held at 10 a.m. to benefit the Mesa United Way. Tickets are just $1.00 per round to participate and you could take home a delicious cake prepared by EVIT Commercial Baking and Pastry Arts students. Organized tours of the campus will also be offered and EVIT’s own radio station, 90.7 FM The Goldmine, will provide entertainment throughout the event including a performance by local band Revision 7.

Inside each of the 35 program classrooms EVIT students and teachers will lead interactive activities and demonstrations specific to their industry. Examples include mini makeovers in Cosmetology, individual and group in-studio photography by Multimedia, dental impressions in Dental Assisting, a New York-inspired clothing display in Fashion Merchandising and cooking demos in Culinary Arts.

The free public event begins at 9 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. with the coronation of Mister and Miss EVIT. Students competing to represent the school as Mister and Miss EVIT are selected based upon grades, attendance, and teacher recommendation, but the winners are the students who raise the most money for the Mesa United Way campaign. Last year’s event raised more than $4,000 for the cause.

The parade of classes will take place at 11:45 a.m. It was introduced last year and has quickly become a favorite of many attendees. Each class will be represented by students and their “tools of the trade.” It will include fire engines, police cars, an ambulance, business and school mascots and EVIT students dressed in the attire of their business. The parade will be led by Mister and Miss EVIT candidates in cars and trucks provided by Thorobred Chevrolet.

The first anniversary celebration of 90.7 FM The Goldmine will be at 1 p.m. immediately following EVIT Expo. All are welcome to stay and celebrate with the Radio Broadcasting Department.

EVIT Expo 2012 is being held just in time for parents and students in the participating school districts to come and find out what EVIT is all about, before students register for fall 2012 classes. All programs will be open for visitors. Instructors, current students and industry partners will be on hand to answer questions.

EVIT also offers classes for adults who are looking for career training or continuing education in a variety of programs such as nursing, cosmetology, HVAC, welding and the newly-added helicopter pilot training. The School of Adult Education will be open during event to answer any questions about admissions or financial aid.
