The Cosmetology program at the East Valley Institute of Technology donated gift certificates for 1,000 haircuts to Helen’s Hope Chest, a local non-profit in Mesa dedicated to helping foster children with their basic needs such as clothing, school supplies, books and toys. The vouchers were distributed over the holidays with help from the Mesa United Way.

“The opportunity to donate haircuts to this worthy cause is a win-win for our students” said Pam Devine, EVIT cosmetology instructor. “Students are gaining valuable clinical skills and hours toward their state certification while building character and giving back to the community.”

More than fifty vouchers have already been redeemed but they do not have an expiration date so clients are able to make an appointment at any time during the school year.

The feedback from the recipients has been very positive. Linda Haskell of the Mesa United Way writes “Helen's Hope Chest could not get over the incredible generosity of the students and staff to provide haircuts for the children. We continue to hear how very special it was for the families to receive one.”

EVIT Cosmetology operates a public clinic where it offers discounted services by students, under the direct supervision of Licensed Cosmetology instructors, including skin care, hair coloring, hair treatments, nail care, makeup and styling. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 480-461-4033.

High school students interested in attending the EVIT Cosmetology program for the 2012/13 school year are required to submit their application by Feb. 27. Enrollment for adult learners is on-going through the EVIT School of Adult Education. For more information, call 480-461-4000.
