Diesel program doubles enrollment, offers Boot Camp class
Posted on 10/14/2014

The Diesel/Heavy Equipment program at the East Valley Institute of Technology is experiencing its highest enrollment in three years due to increased demand for diesel technicians.

“When you look at the demand for diesel mechanics, it’s definitely on the rise,” said assistant principal Tim Vanda, “and I think our students are starting to realize that. There’s good potential to be hired right away in diesel.”

Enrollment in Diesel/Heavy Equipment doubled in size this year to 50 students, and Vanda expects that growth to continue.

Last year, the program formed a new partnership with Empire CAT. Empire joined the Diesel/Heavy Equipment Advisory Council and has been working with instructors in guiding curriculum, providing training resources and offering job shadowing and guest lectures. Students who complete the two-year program may, if desired, continue training at Mesa Community College’s “Think Big” program. If qualified, they can also apply for entry level employment at Empire Southwest.

Diesel/heavy equipment is one of the fastest growing fields in the transportation industry today. Diesel mechanics work on a wide variety of diesel engines including those found in buses, trucks, RVs, bulldozers, cranes, farm tractors and trains.

Interested high school students in the East Valley can experience the Diesel/Heavy Equipment program for themselves by signing up for EVIT Boot Camp on Oct. 25 at the Dr. A. Keith Crandell (Main) Campus, 1601 W. Main St., Mesa. This free event allows students to participate in an actual class to see if they would like to enroll in the program.

Other EVIT programs offering classes during Boot Camp include: 3D Animation; Automotive Technologies; Collision Repair; Construction; Cosmetology; Culinary Arts; Early Childhood Education; Fashion, Interiors & Textiles; Fire Science; Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC); Information Technology & Engineering Careers (iTEC); Law Enforcement; Multimedia Technologies; Precision Machining Technology; Radio/Audio Production; Video Production; Welding; and the EVIT School of Health Sciences, including Dental Careers, Emergency Medical Technician, Human Anatomy & Physiology for Medical Careers, Massage Therapy, Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Pharmacy Technician and Physical Therapy Technician.
