Why just fly a plane when you can build it too? High school students in the Aviation program at the East Valley Institute of Technology are building an airplane!

The students meet every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at EVIT East Campus, 6625 S. Power Road, Mesa, to build the flyable SONEX Waiex aircraft. The group is being mentored by volunteers from EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Chapter #228 and pilots and mechanics based at Mesa’s Falcon Field airport.

Media are welcome to visit the East Campus on a Saturday and see the plane-build in progress. This coming Saturday, March 8, EVIT’s Aviation students will also be volunteering at Gateway Aviation Day presented by Eastmark from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is just northeast of the EVIT East Campus.

EVIT will have an information booth at the Gateway event in the main Pavilion hangar where interested prospective students can experience flight simulators, unmanned aircraft, airframe fabrication and power plant displays. Instructors and students will be there to answer questions about EVIT’s high school and college aviation education pathways in commercial flight, air traffic control, unmanned aircraft systems operations, airframe and power plant mechanics, and airport management.

EVIT is a public career and technical school offering tuition-free occupational training for high school students and tuition-based training for adults. EVIT operates two centralized Mesa campuses – EVIT East at 6625 S. Power Road and the Dr. A. Keith Crandell (Main) Campus at 1601 W. Main St.

Programs include aviation, a range of health careers, 3D animation, early childhood education, law enforcement, culinary arts, cosmetology, and much more.

EVIT students have a 98 percent high school graduation rate, and 2 out of 3 go on to college.
