EVIT Superintendent's Update - Feb. 2018

February updates from Dr. Downey, EVIT Superintendent

JTED funding

EVIT would like to thank Gov. Doug Ducey for including in his budget the restoration of full funding for Arizona’s three largest JTEDs. The urban JTEDs -- EVIT, West-MEC and Pima -- have not been funded at 100 percent for many years, even though we serve over half of Arizona’s JTED students. We appreciate Gov. Ducey’s support for the quality career and technical education we provide and the important role we play in workforce development.

National spotlight on aviation

The EVIT Aviation program at our East Campus was featured in the January issue of Techniques, the national magazine for career and technical education. Read the article here: http://www.evit.com/news/what_s_new/partnerships_make_evit_aviation_training_soar. We are currently in the process of expanding the size, scope and depth of our Aviation program at EVIT East. Nationally, there is a tremendous shortage of pilots and other aviation workers, so we are trying to position EVIT Aviation to help that industry. The Aviation expansion will be part of a construction and renovation project at the East Campus that will also include expansion of our Veterinary Science program.

EVIT Expo

There was a huge turnout for this year’s EVIT Expo on Jan. 27 at the Dr. A. Keith Crandell (Main) Campus in Mesa. We had lines out the door for several programs that parents and prospective students wanted to see, and the trolley tours were packed all day. Thank you to the East Valley school districts that helped promote EVIT Expo to their students. We appreciate their support for EVIT’s central campus programs, as well as the satellite CTE programs in their high schools.

Adult Education @ EVIT

Registration is currently under way for EVIT’s high school programs AND our adult programs. East Valley schools should keep in mind that EVIT’s adult education programs can be a great option for seniors who still don’t have post-graduation plans or for those who want to acquire a marketable skill before they go to college. Adult Education @ EVIT offers a wide range of programs that prepare students to earn industry certifications and licenses such as Practical Nursing, Surgical Technologist, Collision Repair, Welding, Cosmetology and much more. Our adult programs are accredited by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education, so we are able to offer adult students financial aid such as Pell grants. And, the EVIT Foundation also provides assistance to students with financial need. For more information, contact Crystal Otts at 480-461-4013.

Happy CTE Month!

February is Career and Technical Education Month. We will be featuring a number of EVIT students and alumni on all of our social media platforms. So be sure to check out their success stories on Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, YouTube and Twitter! And if you haven’t seen it yet, here’s EVIT’s new promo video: https://youtu.be/MBPObmFF_aw
