EVIT Nursing Assistant alum Nakyra Myles at Banner Desert Medical Center. If you seek treatment at a Banner Health facility, there’s a good chance you will receive care from a medical professional trained by the EVIT School of Health Sciences at the East Valley Institute of Technology.

“Technical programs such as EVIT are critical in meeting Banner Health’s hiring needs,” said Carol Cheney, the health-care provider’s vice president of staffing and workplace planning. “A majority of our clinical support staff (Respiratory Therapy, Emergency Room Technicians, Physical Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Imaging, Pharmacy Technicians, CNAs, Medical Assistants, etc.) obtain their training through technical training programs.”

EVIT provides over 40 career training programs, including a dozen health-care specialties, such as Behavioral Health, Dental, Massage Therapy and Surgical Technologist. Training is tuition-free for East Valley high school students; adult students pay tuition, with financial aid available to those who qualify.

Nakyra Myles, 19, completed the Nursing Assistant program at the EVIT East Campus in the spring of 2016, passed her state exams through the Arizona State Board of Nursing, and began working that August as a Licensed Nursing Assistant at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa. While she was still a student, Myles gained experience in working with patients through clinicals at nursing homes.

“Doing the clinicals really helped. It was nice to get that while doing the book work,” Myles said of the EVIT program. “A lot of people said, ‘You’re starting out so young.’ But it was preparing me for the real world.”

Since 2013, Banner Health facilities have hired at least 20 students after they completed their EVIT training, according to EVIT placement records. Many more gained experience at Banner hospitals while they were still in school. Cheney said that in 2017 alone, Banner facilities hosted 111 EVIT Surgical Technologist and Emergency Medical Technician students in clinical internships.

“We are currently looking at expanding our relationship with EVIT in terms of hosting Medical Assistant students in the ambulatory environment. We are happy to explore CNA as well,” Cheney said.

Aside from shift needs, skills and clinical requirements, Banner looks for prospective hires who meet the provider’s core values. “Banner does use an online pre-hire behavioral assessment … That assessment focuses on themes that align to our values …,” Cheney said. “Technical programs like EVIT are extremely important in helping Banner Health meet our mission.”

Myles enjoys her job at Banner Desert, especially in learning how to work with, and have compassion for, patients with mental issues -- an experience, she said, that has opened her eyes to more of the real world. “It woke me up to a lot of things.”

Being a Licensed Nursing Assistant is just the beginning. While working for Banner, Myles is also attending Phoenix College and will be transferring to Gateway Community College. Her goal is to become an ultrasound technician. Her EVIT training gave her a good foundation on which to build her developing health-care career.

East Valley high school students should take full advantage of the career training EVIT offers, she said. “This is your opportunity. Do it while you have the chance.”

EVIT students have a 98 percent high school graduation rate, 2 out of 3 go to college, and 92 percent are in college, jobs or the military within one year of completing their training.
