EVIT Superintendent's Update - Dec. 2017
Posted on 12/06/2017
December updates from EVIT Superintendent Dr. Sally Downey
Well-deserved recognition
Kudos to Chandler Unified, one of EVIT’s 10 founding school districts, for being second in learning gains among the nation’s 200 largest school districts. Only the Chicago school system ranks higher, according to a new report featured in the New York Times. It’s no accident that Chandler continues to achieve honors and recognition. Under the long-time leadership of Superintendent Camille Casteel, there is a commitment to striving for excellence that can be seen across the entire Chandler district, including its career and technical education programs that are part of the EVIT JTED.

Presidential Scholars
Congratulations are also due to Megan Phillips, a student in the EVIT satellite biotechnology program at Red Mountain High School in Mesa. Megan is one of five Arizona students who have been selected to represent the state as nominees for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education. Their selection was based on academic rigor, technical competence, employability skills, and ingenuity and creativity. Twenty winners nationwide will be selected and recognized in May. EVIT is pleased to fund quality CTE programs that give students like Megan the skills and knowledge to succeed.

Thank you, Fiesta Bowl Charities!
Three teachers at the EVIT Main Campus were each recently awarded $5,000 by Fiesta Bowl Charities through its Wishes for Teachers program: Fashion, Interiors & Textiles instructor Kim Foulger, Criminal Justice instructor Elizabeth Franco, and Collision Repair instructor Vern Gamble. Fiesta Bowl officials said they have never awarded so many grants to one school. Great job, EVIT teachers!

Gilbert principals
The EVIT East Campus and Principal Craig Pearson recently had a great visit with principals from Gilbert Public Schools, who toured EVIT East to learn more about the CTE opportunities it offers for their high school students. All students in the EVIT JTED – both central campus and satellite – benefit when we can find ways to work together as partners. We appreciate the Gilbert administrators who took time out of their busy schedules to tour the East Campus and learn more about our central campus programs.

A time to give
Did you know that just like all other public schools in Arizona, EVIT accepts tax credit donations? The allowable limit is $200 for a single individual or head of household or $400 for a married couple filing a joint return. Go to this link to donate: http://bit.ly/2jl9eaI. The EVIT Foundation offers additional giving opportunities. Visit http://bit.ly/2AeEfre for more information.

Happy Holidays from EVIT
As the fall semester winds down, we would like to thank everyone who contributes to EVIT’s success – our dedicated teachers and governing board, generous industry partners, supportive sending schools and elected leaders, parents who value quality CTE, and our wonderful students who inspire us every day with their passion and enthusiasm. EVIT truly is a team effort.
