We Hire EVIT: L3 Technologies
Posted on 03/07/2018
L3 Technologies hires EVIT alum like Austin Ramirez, who continues to build on his training he got at EVIT. At L3 Technologies Inc. in Tempe, Austin Ramirez works as a builder on the Department of Defense contractor’s equipment and fabrication installation team. It’s an appropriate job title for the Mesa 20-year-old who not only builds night vision technology for the military, but also continues to build on the skills and experience he gained as a student at the East Valley Institute of Technology.

Ramirez completed the EVIT Automotive Technologies program and graduated from Mesa’s Skyline High School in May 2016. From there, he went to work for Superstition Springs Chevrolet for about a year. Then he applied at L3 Technologies where his aptitude for mechanical skills and great attitude impressed Michael Tellez, Supervisor, Manufacturing Equipment.

“We know we’re going to train them, so we’re looking for people who have the skill set and the right mindset,” Tellez said. “We require them to be sponges.”

In Ramirez, L3 Technologies gained an employee who is eager to soak up as much knowledge as he can. After six months on the job, he is now interested in going to Mesa Community College to study electronics. His goal: “To become a technician, or maybe even an engineer.”

Ramirez is the perfect example of what quality career and technical education can do for students – and industry. At EVIT, he not only learned the technical skills to repair and maintain engine performance, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspension and alignment, but also the “soft” skills that employers in any industry look for, such as communication skills and being able to work as part of a team.

“EVIT really puts you in a situation that’s like an actual job,” he said. “They put you in a uniform and you have to get along with other students and work together. They prepare you for that.”

EVIT provides over 40 career training programs at two central Mesa campuses and branch campuses in Apache Junction and Fountain Hills. Students attend their high school for a half-day and EVIT for a half-day, where their career training is tuition-free. EVIT also offers tuition-based programs for adults, with financial aid available to those who qualify.

EVIT’s mission: To provide students a career and college preparatory training experience that produces a qualified workforce, meeting the market-driven needs of business and industry.

Multiple industries – automotive, manufacturing, defense – have already benefited from Ramirez’s EVIT training. L3 Technologies, which manufactures image intensifiers for the military and commercial services, wants to hire more EVIT students. “We are a growing business and have many positions open,” Tellez said. ”We want to hire the caliber of candidate that we have seen in EVIT students.”

Many EVIT programs, such as Precision Machining, Automotive, Welding, HVAC, Cyber Security, and Computer Programming and Repair, train students who would meet L3 Technologies’ needs.
Ramirez enjoys his work at L3 Technologies and is optimistic about his future. “I love working here,” he said. “I love supporting our military and giving them the edge in support of their profession.”

He recommends that other East Valley students consider enrolling at EVIT. “It will give you the edge over all the other kids,” he said.

EVIT students have a 98 percent high school graduation rate, 2 out of 3 go to college, and 92 percent are in college, jobs or the military within a year of completing their training.
