An adult student working at Bistro 13, a restaurant operated by the East Valley Institute of Technology, who was shot on Wednesday morning had injuries that were not life-threatening and has been treated and released from the hospital. The shooting at Bistro 13 was one of several shootings in West Mesa that started across the street from the EVIT Main Campus at a motel.

Seven students and one instructor were working in the Bistro when the shooting there occurred. During the incident, the instructor’s vehicle was taken by the suspect. Mesa Police is handling the investigation. Any questions regarding the shooting and investigation should be directed to Mesa Police.

Immediately after gunshots were heard, Mesa Police ordered the EVIT campus into lockdown, meaning all doors were locked and students were moved into locked rooms where they would be safest. Through a revised departure process coordinated with police, EVIT evacuated students off the campus after the lockdown.

Parents of the affected students were notified. Maricopa Integrated Health System has sent a mobile crisis team to EVIT to provide counseling. MIHS has also set up a crisis hotline for anyone affected by Wednesday’s shootings in Mesa. That number is 1-800-203-2273.

The EVIT Main Campus, located just west of Bistro 13, re-opened for afternoon classes, but students were not required to attend. The suspect was apprehended Wednesday afternoon.

Bistro 13 will be closed temporarily, but will re-open as soon as possible.

EVIT appreciates the efforts of Mesa Police in ensuring the safety of our students and staff, and the outpouring of support we received today from the East Valley community.
