We Hire EVIT: Adelante Healthcare
Posted on 11/20/2017
Becka Bear and Abigail Gana, EVIT alumnas, now work as medical assistants at Adelante Healthcare in Mesa, AZ.

When Adelante Healthcare-Mesa has job openings, practice administrator James Workman not only looks for applicants with the required technical skills, but also those who are motivated to provide quality customer service. He knows just where to find what he’s looking for – right up the sidewalk at the East Valley Institute of Technology.

“It’s inspiring to see 17- and 18-year-olds who have a passion for what they want to do and a commitment to their own community,” he said. “You can see in them that sense of pride, that sense of community and that passion to help others.”

As a community health center located on EVIT’s Dr. A. Keith Crandell (Main) Campus, Adelante partners with the EVIT School of Health Sciences to ensure students receive training that meets current health-care industry standards – and to ensure Adelante has a pipeline of workers qualified to meet the health center’s needs.

The health sciences complex is just next-door to Adelante, close enough for EVIT’s medical assistant and dental assistant students to walk over and work as externs in a clinical setting. Adelante health professionals also spend time in EVIT’s health sciences classrooms – both at the Main Campus in west Mesa and at the East Campus in east Mesa – working with teachers and students.

“We have a tangible role with the students and their education,” Workman said.

EVIT’s health-care programs are among 40 career training options available to East Valley high school students and adults. High school programs are tuition-free; adults pay tuition, but financial aid is available for those who qualify. Every EVIT program is built around hands-on training, and nearly every program prepares students to earn industry certifications and licenses.

Businesses like Adelante are an invaluable part of that training. Every program has an advisory council of industry representatives who give guidance, donate equipment and supplies, and provide job-shadowing opportunities and internships.

EVIT offers 13 health-care programs, such as Emergency Medical Technician, Massage Therapy and much more. In the past five years, Arizona businesses have hired 1,509 EVIT students right after they graduated from high school and completed their EVIT program. That includes 634 students from the EVIT School of Health Sciences.

Workman estimated that six to eight EVIT alumni currently work at Adelante’s Mesa location, which sees approximately 4,000 patients a month.

Abigail Gana, 20, has worked at Adelante for two years since completing the EVIT Medical Assistant program in 2015. She loves her job and plans to continue working as a medical assistant. Fellow EVIT alum Beka Bear, 19, likes working at Adelante too, but views it as a first step. Bear, who completed the Medical Assistant program last May, wants to eventually become a trauma specialist. So she’s saving her money to help pay for college, pre-med and medical school while she gains experience in the health-care industry.

Workman has no doubt that Beka, Abigail and other students from EVIT’s health programs can reach their goals.

“They’re ambitious and focused to hone in on a career path at such a young age,” he said. “If you have the passion, you can make it happen at EVIT.”

EVIT students have a 98 percent high school graduation rate, 2 out of 3 go on to college and 92 percent are in college, the military or related employment within one year of completing their training.
